Network Engineer

Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking applicants for a Network Engineer to work within a team of network engineers responsible for architecting, implementing, securing, and administering the university’s data network.

This position requires an in depth understanding of routing protocols, datacenter technologies, firewall technologies, and the ability to design and secure large-scale networks to ensure proper availability and performance. Duties include designing a robust and secure network framework for providing Internet service, core route/switch technologies, and data center networking to meet the needs of Iowa State University.

ITS provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to the students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State. ITS partners with IT professionals from around campus to provide more specialized IT resources to ISU’s academic and business units.

The applicant must be detail oriented, self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to troubleshoot while learning new skills, tools, and technologies. Applicants must also possess strong time management, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills with the ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems. A successful candidate must have a track record of understanding technology and security and be familiar with trends and how they can be applied in a higher education setting.

This position offers remote work flexibility but the incumbent will need to have the ability to come to campus for certain meetings. During remote work the applicant will be required to access the campus network through VPN technologies, utilizing video conferencing technologies to collaborate with team members and campus partners.

Familiarity with the following technologies and equipment are ideal: Cisco Nexus, Cisco Catalyst, Cisco ASR product lines. F5 and Gigamon hardware platforms. DNS, DHCP, and IP address management, particularly Infoblox deployments. Monitoring and logging applications such as Splunk, SolarWinds, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cisco DNA-Center.
