About this session

Join us for an enlightening panel discussion on data governance, featuring leaders from the financial services and insurance sectors. Our panelists will discuss their organizations’ data governance journeys, highlighting key milestones, challenges, and successful strategies. They will also address common misconceptions about data governance and provide practical insights for dispelling them. 

Additionally, panelists will explore the impact of generative AI on data governance and share their predictions for the future of data governance.

Scot Hansen
Enterprise Data Governance Director
Farm Bureau Financial Services

Scot Hansen has been with Farm Bureau Financial Services for six years and is currently the Enterprise Data Governance Director, where he leads a team of Data Governance and Business Intelligence Reporting professionals whose focus is to provide clear, concise, and accurate information throughout the organization to improve financial strength and Client/member experience. Scot has degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics with an MBA from Drake University and more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, focused on improving business outcomes through trusted data in application development, reporting, analytics, master data management, and data governance.    Scot holds numerous designations, including Standford Certified Project Manager and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Scot is very active in the data community, serving as the current chair for the TAI Data Governance Roundtable, participating in the NAMIC AI Working Group, and being published in Insurance CIO Outlook. 

Renee Langeness
Director - Data Governance
Principal Financial Group

Renee is the Director of Data and Analytics Governance at Principal Financial Group. In that role, she is responsible for establishing the Enterprise Data Governance program as well as the Ethical and Responsible AI program. Responsibilities include ownership and oversight for data management and AI policies and standards and providing visibility to compliance with those policies and standards to leadership, audit, and regulators. Additional responsibilities include the management of data domain decisions and oversight, technical enablement of data and AI governance, and maintenance of the data and AI governance frameworks. Strategic areas of focus include improving oversight capabilities, maximizing the value of data and AI, and reducing data management and AI risk. Renee is a member of the leadership team for Enterprise Data and Analytics at Principal Financial Group and reports to the Chief Data and Analytics Officer.

Prior to her current role, Renee Langeness led the Information Security & Risk Global Governance, Risk, and Compliance teams for Principal Financial Group. She was responsible for developing the Information Security Policies and Standards and ensuring compliance with those policies throughout the organization. Additional responsibilities included assessing the information security risks of vendors and systems and maintaining information security compliance with regulatory bodies. Renee served on the leadership team of the Chief Information Security Officer and contributed to the overall Information Security and Information Services strategies for Principal Financial Group. 

Renee has worked with and led information technology professionals at Principal Financial Group for over 27 years. She has actively participated in efforts to evaluate talent for hire across the organization, lead teams through their transition to Agile, and drove strategic initiatives.

Renee graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Management Information Systems.

Kim Olson
AVP Information Technology - Data Governance Enterprise Data Management
Athene

Kim Olson manages and understands data using proven governance best practices developed through experience and bringing financial value to companies. Her Enterprise Architecture experience spans the full spectrum from Business and Data Architecture, Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing and Data Lake, Master Data Management, Data Security, Reference Data Management, Data Quality and Metadata Management. 

Kim has created, managed, and maintained over 10 data governance programs in various companies and industries. The focus of some of the programs included Data Quality, Data Architecture, Business Glossary, End-to-End Metadata Lineage, Enterprise Service Bus, Information Delivery, Technical Footprint and Decision-Making.  

She has presented at the Data Governance and Information Quality Conference, Enterprise Data World Conference, DAMA Global Data Management local chapters, luncheon academies and technology user groups. 

Kim’s education includes a Master of Science in Software Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Prior certifications include Data Management Professional (CDMP), Project Management Professional (PMP)and Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT).

Aaron Horn
Chief Information Officer
Benchmark, Inc.

Aaron Horn is the Chief Information Officer at Benchmark, a roof and pavement consulting company headquartered in Cedar Rapids. Prior to Benchmark, Aaron was the Executive Director at the nonprofit NewBoCo. Aaron earned his degrees in Management Information Systems and Entrepreneurial Studies at Iowa State University. He has also led the IT teams at the Iowa Interstate Railroad, healthcare startup Radiology Protocols, and global ag companies Becker Underwood and BASF in Ames. Aaron is on the Board of Directors for Miracle Travel Works in Des Moines and also serves as Board Chair for Candlelighters NYC in New York City, Co-founder and President of Beat Cancer Today in Cedar Rapids, Board Secretary for NewBoCo in Cedar Rapids, and District 9EC Childhood Cancer Chair for Lions Club International.
