TAI Advances Iowa’s Tech Priorities in Washington, D.C.

DES MOINES, Iowa (May 13, 2025) — The Technology Association of Iowa (TAI) recently visited Washington, D.C. to meet with Iowa’s federal delegation, attend a Congressional subcommittee hearing, and collaborate with technology industry leaders from across North America.

As part of TAI’s ongoing federal policy work, the trip focused on strengthening Iowa’s role in national technology conversations—highlighting innovation taking place in the state and advocating for policies that support the growth of Iowa’s technology ecosystem.

“Our goal is to position Iowa as a recognized leader in technology and innovation,” said Brian Waller, President of TAI. “The visit and meetings marked an important opportunity to advocate for smart, future-focused policy and elevate the voice of Iowa’s tech industry at the national level.”

TAI met with Senator Joni Ernst and Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks to discuss the growing demand for technology-driven solutions across Iowa’s industries. In those meetings, TAI emphasized the need for federal support to increase investment in innovation, enable research and development, and support a competitive environment for Iowa’s small and mid-sized tech companies.

A key policy focus included calling for the repeal of current R&D expense amortization requirements—freeing up capital for reinvestment and ensuring Iowa companies remain competitive in an increasingly fast-moving tech economy.

TAI also attended the House Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation hearing, titled Unlocking Government Efficiency Through IT Modernization. The hearing reinforced several national priorities that align with Iowa’s needs:

• The importance of IT modernization in driving government efficiency
• The urgency of replacing outdated legacy systems
• The growing challenge of attracting and retaining IT talent
• The value of oversight and accountability in federal tech initiatives
• A continued role for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in measuring modernization impact

Beyond federal meetings, TAI leadership joined peer organizations from across North America through TECNA (Technology Councils of North America) to align on national policy priorities and build shared momentum for technology advancement.

TECNA’s programming brought together members of Congress, federal stakeholders, and technology leaders to discuss ways to support innovation, strengthen workforce pipelines, and ensure policy keeps pace with emerging technology.

“Collaborating with peer organizations ensures Iowa’s technology industry has a seat at the table,” said Waller. “We’re not just responding to national conversations—we’re helping shape the direction of innovation policy.”

While this year’s D.C. visit has wrapped, TAI remains committed to year-round advocacy. The association will continue to engage elected officials at the state and federal levels, offering Iowa’s tech sector as a resource in helping develop smart, balanced, and forward-looking legislation.
