RECAP: 2024 Catalysts Live Event

Equity & Accessibility Powered by Technology

The Catalysts Series is a collection of conversations with leaders and changemakers of organizations who forge new paths through technology innovation to guide Iowa’s technology industry forward to a more inclusive, equitable and diverse future.

At the 2024 Catalysts Live event on July 18th, this year’s five honorees were celebrated and honored.

Seven years ago, the Catalysts Series was created to highlight those who inspire change, forge new paths and ignite innovations across the state of Iowa.

But it’s grown into much more than that. Today, the series is a testament to the transformative power of technology and the community’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and diversity.

At this year’s Catalysts Live event, attendees heard inspiring stories and diverse perspectives that highlighted how five different organizations are enabling equity and accessibility through technology for their customers, employees and communities.

This year’s honorees were:

Brian Waller, president of the Technology Association of Iowa, kicked off the event by sharing that each of the honorees showcased how technology can be a force for equity, accessibility, empowering communities, and enriching the lives of those they serve. They’ve all been pivotal in shaping a more inclusive future.

Don’t just be inspired by these stories. Let them challenge you and propel you to action. Amplify the narratives beyond this room and be a catalyst for change.

Laura Smith, chief information officer at UnityPoint Health, which served as presenting sponsor of the series, also took the stage to share an opening message. She pointed out that the motto of her organization is, “Know how much you matter to this world.”

This event really brings that [motto] to life for our organization. We understand that true strength comes from community. That’s why we’re here.

When people feel supported, accepted and valued, they thrive. This includes in the technology sector. Smith noted that the Catalysts Series is one way of fostering a culture of inclusivity.

Waller ended by emphasizing that the event is much bigger than himself and those in the room.

“They say there’s a workforce shortage in Iowa, so why would we not take every opportunity we can to get those on the sidelines who don’t feel like they have an opportunity to be in this world, to make sure they have that opportunity,” he said.

Together, we can create a future where everyone feels valued and empowered, regardless of background, identity or ability.
