Security professionals have a translation problem. Security professionals often speak in binary: CVEs, zero-days, and latency; while Boards, C-Suites, and staff speak in risk, revenue, and convenience. When these languages fail to connect, budgets get cut, cultures sour, and organizations remain vulnerable. This presentation argues that the modern security leader’s most powerful tool isn’t a firewall, but a narrative.
Moving beyond the old tactics of “Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt” this presentation explores the psychology of influence. We will examine why logical data dump and number overload fail to move the needle, and how specific cognitive biases have the capability to sabotage security decisions before they are even made.
Beyond vocabulary, we will tackle the narrative structure by applying time tested frameworks for storytelling like Freytag’s Pyramid and applying a variation of the classic “Hero’s Journey” story template. A common pitfall is the Security Leader casting themselves as the hero swooping in to save the day. This presentation flips the script: the Business and Users are the Hero, the Threat is the Villain, and the Security Team is the wise Guide like Yoda or Gandalf. By restructuring your updates and budget requests into this time-honored narrative arc, you shift from being viewed as a cost center to becoming the strategic partner essential to the hero’s success.
Kyle Hauswirth is the Information Security Officer & Cyber Security Engineer at the Ames National Corporation, where he bridges the gap between technical controls and business strategy. With a unique background that spans the U.S. Senate and security engineering roles in the banking and retail sectors, Kyle specializes in the “human side” of cybersecurity. He holds a degree in Political Science and Computer Science from Simpson College, a combination that drives his focus on policy, psychology, and the art of translation in a technical field.
Beyond his day job, Kyle is a dedicated community leader, serving as the Vice President of the ISACA Iowa Chapter, Past Chair of the City of Ames Public Art Commission and board member of the Ames Foundation and Ames Main Street. He is passionate about transforming security leaders into storytellers, helping organizations move from a culture of compliance to a culture of genuine resilience.
