Iowa Becomes the Sixth State to Adopt Consumer Data Privacy Law
For Immediate Release
DES MOINES, Iowa (March 28, 2023) – Yesterday, Governor Kim Reynolds signed Senate File 262 into law, making Iowa the sixth state in the U.S. to adopt a comprehensive consumer data privacy law. Senate File 262 was unanimously passed by the Iowa Senate and House. The bill will take effect on January 1, 2025.
“In our digital age, it’s never been more important to state, clearly and unmistakably, that consumers deserve a reasonable level of transparency and control over their personal data,” said Gov. Reynolds. “That’s exactly what this bill does, making Iowa just the sixth state to provide this kind of comprehensive protection.”
The data privacy law applies to companies that control or process data of at least 100,000 Iowa consumers or control or process data of at least 25,000 Iowa consumers and derive 50% of their revenue from the sale of personal data. Complete bill details are available here.
“The passage of this consumer data privacy bill is a significant step forward for Iowa. We are pleased with the Iowa legislature for passing this bill and applaud the work of our Public Policy Committee who were instrumental in guiding this important legislation forward,” said Brian Waller, President of TAI. “While we prefer a uniform standard at the federal level, we are proud to see this legislation unanimously passed and signed by the Governor.”
