Dr. Lilia A. Abron Biography
Dr. Lilia A. Abron is the first African-American woman in the nation, and the third woman at the University of Iowa, to receive a doctorate in chemical engineering. In 1978, she became the founder and C.E.O. of PEER Consultants, P.C., an environmental consulting firm headquartered in Washington, D.C.PEER Consultants, P.C. provides professional services for the restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of the physical environment – air, land and water. Additionally, the company believes that humans and the physical environment are fully compatible and exist to the mutual benefit of both. The company provides its services through four major discipline areas:
The company operates 10 full-staffed offices throughout the U.S. and internationally. PEER is known for its dedication to the environmental engineering profession and for the quality of its work products. The company is the recipient of numerous quality awards and citations from its clients, the business community, and social and philanthropic organizations in recognition of its demonstrated stewardship of the environment.
Beyond her work at PEER, Abron has been active in a number of community organizations, including serving as president of the Washington, D.C., chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and as a board member for the Baptist Home for Children. In addition, Dr. Abron uses her business acumen and engineering expertise to promote science education in primary and secondary schools. Her company supports science fair projects by purchasing equipment and supplies for students, and Dr. Abron encourages PEER staff to work with children in their neighborhood schools.
